EPA plan supports clean air, healthy lungs

Letter to the Editor

In a recent column, Assemblyman Jacque says that energy should be a bipartisan issue. He then presents the partisan position of the MacIver Institute and proceeds to tell us how much he loves coal.

The health impacts of coal are well-documented. Jacque should look into how coal-fired power plants affect the health of the children of Brown County.

I, along with most other Americans, support the EPA’s Clean Power Plan. Unlike Jacque, we are actually in favor of clean air and healthy lungs.

The negative impacts of coal on the ecosystems we depend upon are also well-established. However, maybe the best argument for giving up coal is economic. Jacque must not realize that Wisconsin does not have any coal. The money we spend on coal is money (and jobs) that we are basically sending out of state. The sooner that Wisconsin develops its own geothermal, solar, wind, and biofuel resources, the better.

We have the technology and engineering skills to give up fossil fuels. Corporations like Intel, Mars, IKEA, Procter & Gamble, and Apple are moving ahead to an era of renewable energy. It is unfortunate that Jacque and the Republicans have Wisconsin stuck in the past.
