Appleton woman killed in U.S. 41 crash

A 34-year-old Appleton woman was killed and a 23-year-old De Pere man was injured when their vehicles collided in the southbound lanes of U.S. 41 near County U in the town of Lawrence on Tuesday morning.

It happened just before 9 a.m. Erin Cutsforth of Appleton, driving north, lost control of her SUV, drove through the ditch and went into the southbound lanes, striking a truck driven by David Byrne of De Pere, according to the Hobart-Lawrence Police Department..

Cutsforth, who was alone in her SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Byrne sustained undetermined injuries when his truck caught fire. He was trapped inside but escaped just before officers arrived and was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Both southbound lanes of U.S. 41 were closed for about five hours while the Brown County Reconstruction Team investigated. The road reopened to traffic at 1:45 p.m.
